“Cape Proud” of Heidi Lowe and Paul Camenisch
Jewelry designer Heidi Lowe and builder, Paul Camenisch, Cape Henlopen High School graduates of 1995, have crafted a successful life full of creative end entrepreneurial endeavors.
Although Heidi and Paul were friends at Cape Henlopen High School, they did not begin their relationship until much after graduation. Today, they are a power duo running two successful companies.
While in high school, Heidi was busy in the art department where she began to develop her love of jewelry making. In fact, Heidi’s mother, Colleen was a longtime art teacher in the Cape Henlopen School District.
Heidi honed her skills as an artisan under the guidance of art teacher, Mr. Gardowski. Finally, Heidi’s senior year, Gardowski handed her some metal and said, “go make a piece of jewelry”.
What Heidi created, was a stamped sterling silver band that she still wears today. In fact, she made her now husband Paul, a matching ring after they got married.
While Heidi was in the art studio, Paul was developing his own skills with architectural drafting teacher, Dr. Seuss. Like Heidi, Paul knew early on that he was interested in building and architecture.
After graduating high school in 1995, Heidi headed to Maine College of Art in Portland Maine to pursue a degree in metals and jewelry. Paul headed to Appalachian State to obtain a degree in green architecture and building principles.
Following college, Heidi decided to pursue her Master’s Degree in jewelry and metal at the State University of New York in New Paltz . During this time, Paul was doing design work for a company in Lake Tahoe and Los Angeles.
Finally in 2002, both Paul and Heidi returned to Delaware for the summer. It was then that they reconnected and instantly knew they had a future together.
Paul returned to Delaware to open his own business, Camenisch Company. He began building custom homes. In the meantime, although Paul and Heidi were dating, Heidi was determined to follow her dream to live in New York.
So at the end of the summer, Heidi and two friends headed for Brooklyn where she worked in galleries, waitressed and sold her own jewelry at markets in New York.
Finally, Heidi returned to Delaware, and in 2008 she opened the Heidi Lowe Gallery in Rehoboth Beach. Since that time, Heidi has garnered national success as a jewelry designer and teacher. She is a professor at Towson University and teaches classes for the VSA (Very Special Arts).
Heidi and Paul have combined their creativity and their love of business and operate two incredibly successful local businesses.
Heidi especially loves creating custom wedding and engagement rings for couples. She also continuously passes on her knowledge and love of jewelry making to interns and students of all ages.
Heidi Lowe and Paul Camenish are shining examples of Cape Alumni, for them, we are “CapeProud”.
